There are many ways to help the North Kingstown Food Pantry...

The North Kingstown Food Pantry welcomes volunteers 16 years old and older. For
young people 14-15 years old, we ask that you have an adult, someone 21 or older,
volunteer with you during your shifts. Younger volunteers can organize food drives and
toiletries donations or ask for donations to the Pantry in place of birthday or holiday gifts.
The Pantry is open 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Wednesday and Friday, Thursday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and the fourth Saturday of every month from 10:00 to 12:00 noon.
We need volunteers to:

1. Assist individuals when they shop at the Pantry.
2. Sort and weigh donated food and other items.
3. Stock the shelves.
4. Pack grocery bags for special food programs.
5. Collect food for the Pantry.
6. Help with office tasks such as data entry and filing.
7. Clean the Pantry, do yard work and maintenance.
8. Help with yard sales and other special events.

Complete the Pantry’s Volunteer Application Form and bring it to the Pantry or email it to
opsmanager.nkfp@gmail.com.

For more information about volunteer opportunities, please talk to our Operations
Manager, Stephen Souls, at 401-885-3663, or email opsmanager.nkfp@gmail.com

Please note that community service opportunities are available on a limited basis.

The Pantry gratefully accepts donations of food, personal care items or household
cleaners. Please note that donated food must be unopened, unexpired and nonperishable. During the growing season, we do accept fresh garden produce. Please call the Pantry to arrange for drop-off of your produce.

Please drop donations off during the Pantry’s open hours. The Rhode Island Community
Food Bank does not allow us to use food dropped off when the Pantry is closed.
You may also drop off donations in bins located at the North Kingstown Chamber of
Commerce, Dave’s Marketplace (Quonset & Wickford), Stop & Shop (Ten Rod Road), Walmart and the North Kingstown Free Library.
If you have organized a food drive and have a large donation, please call the Pantry at
401-885-3663 or email Stephen Souls, our Operations Manager,
opsmanager.nkfp@gmail.com to make sure there is space to accommodate your
donation.

List of items we usually need:

4. Pasta other than spaghetti
5. Pancake mix and syrup

Because government food assistance (SNAP) covers food only, our households also need toiletries and household cleaning products such as:

2. Shampoo and conditioner

3. All-purpose household cleaners
4. Toilet paper and paper towels
5. Shaving cream, razors and deodorant
6. Laundry detergent
7. Toothpaste and toothbrushes
8. Dish soap
9. Toilet paper and paper towels

Run a Food Drive to Help Stock our Shelves
The Pantry welcomes help from generous individuals, churches, community groups,
businesses, and schools. Food drives can provide more variety beyond what the Rhode
Island Community Food Bank offers or what Pantry buyers can find at our local food retail
partners. The Pantry can help you organize your drive, publicize it and arrange for
volunteers to assist if necessary.
Invite friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to share in your project as helpers and
donors.

Here are some guidelines to get you started.

The Pantry can always use non-perishable food and personal care items. Inspire
your group with these ideas for a theme.

  • Come to Breakfast – oatmeal, cereal, coffee, tea, pancake mixes and syrup,
    canned fruit.
  • Lunch Box Surprise – peanut butter jars, granola bars, raisins, juice boxes,
    pudding or fruit cups
  • Keep Warm – dry and canned soup, crackers, canned meat, hot chocolate
  • Five a Day – canned vegetables and fruits, canned or dried
  • What’s for Dinner? – canned stews, pork and beans, instant potatoes, boxed
    mac and cheese, canned meats.
  • Well-Groomed – Shampoos, conditioners, toothbrushes and toothpaste,
    deodorants
  • Clean & Neat – Feminine products, soaps, and body washes

Organize your Event:

  1. Set the date and publicize your drive.
  2. Identify easily accessible collection locations.
  3. Collect the food in sturdy bags or boxes
  4. Call the Pantry at 401-885-3663 or email Stephen Souls, Operations Manager,
opsmanager.nkfp@gmail.com, to arrange a convenient time to drop-off your donation and to make sure there is space to accommodate your donation.

Raise Funds to Increase the Pantry’s Purchasing Power
Donated food and other items add much needed variety to the Pantry’s stock and are so
necessary and appreciated, but donated dollars go further to help the Pantry fill the
shelves. The Pantry purchases food items and personal care items in bulk at a discount
from the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and our food industry partners. That
means every dollar contributed stretches and feeds more hungry people in North
Kingstown.

Share your fundraiser ideas with your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers and
maximize the amount of money you are able to raise. The Pantry can help you organize
your drive, publicize it and arrange for volunteers to assist if necessary.

Here are some guidelines to get you started.
Select which Pantry program your fundraiser will support.

  • Monthly Program – A week’s worth of groceries for the household each
    month
  • Recipe of the Month – An inexpensive, quick, delicious, nutritious meal
  • Senior Supplement – Food items selected to meet the nutrition needs of
    seniors
  • Or, ask the Pantry if there are any special needs or shortages.

Decide on a theme. Here are some ideas:

  • School or business dress down days
  • Yard sales, bake sales or donations at events such as concerts or plays
  • Donations in place of gifts for holidays, birthdays or anniversaries
  • Tournaments – Cornhole, Wii, basketball, or your game of choice. Charge a
    flat fee to compete.

Set the date and publicize your drive. The Pantry can help with flyers or website
postings and social media.

Celebrate a special event with someone, perhaps a birthday, anniversary, graduation or
other special milestone, by making a gift to the Pantry in honor of that person.
